Flat Knitting Machine Description & its working

In Flat knitting, the work is turned occasionally for producing the fabric. It works with the alternate sides which are facing the knitter. Flat knitting Machines produce garments having side seams. It is not possible to create automatic purl stitch or garter stitch because we cannot perform knit in the round.

Knitting is complicated in Flat Knitting machines when compared with circular knitting; subsequently, the stitch is produced by two different movements when knitted from both the right and wrong sides of the fabric. Each needle is movable, and after every row, the material turned out. A flat knitting machine produces complex stitch designs, shaped knitting and precise width adjustment because of its flexibility.

Functions of flat knitting machines parts:

  1. Carriage: With the help of the carriage, the motion of the needle can be controlled.
  2. Carrier Rail: It helps to move the carrier.
  3. Safety Cover: The purpose of the safety cover is to protect from noise and dust.
  4. Side Cover: It is used for safety purposes and presents on both sides of the safety cover.
  5. Tension disk – The primary role of the tension disk is to adjust the tension between the yarns.
  6. Yarn guide plate – It helps in controlling the thread & helps to reach the knot catcher correctly.
  7. Tension – It is used to determining the breakage of the yarn.
  8. Tension Gear: It offers the tension force, which is required for the yarn for feeding it into the yarn feeder.
  9. Fluorescent Lamp: Flat Knitting Machine contains a fluorescent lamp which requires for detecting the needle gaps during the process of knitting. With the help of the controller screen, the lamp could be turned on and off.
  10. Signal Lamp: There are three types of indication lamps are present in the knitting machine:

Green lamp——- It indicates that the knitting machine is in operation.

Blinking Green lamp——– It indicates that the machine is not in operation.

Blinking yellow lamp——— It blinks when there is some error in the machine or any part get damaged during the process of knitting.

  1. Oil Pump: It helps in providing oil to both the racking side plate and brush holder.
  2. Main Power Switch: It is used to turn off the power supply. This button can be used in case of an emergency. It could stop all the function without any delay.
  3. Breaker Switch: It is present on the backside of the controller. It helps in protecting the knitting machine from the odd power source. Whenever such type of condition occurs, then the switch automatically switches off the knitting machine.
  4. Main motor – It helps in controlling the carriage.
  5. Side tension – It is used to absorbing the slack of the yarn when the carriage reverses.
  6. Side tension dial – The primary function of this is to regulate the side tension.
  7. Carrier Control Equipment: It includes:
  8. Carrier – It is used to carry the yarns.
  9. Carrier stopper – It stops the carriers present at both the ends of the carrier rails.
  10. Carrier rail – Rails for the carriers.
  11. Oil Pump: It helps in providing oil to both the racking side plate and brush holder.
  12. Main Power Switch: It is used to turn off the power supply. This button can be used in case of an emergency. It could stop all the function without any delay.
  13. Breaker Switch: It is present on the backside of the controller. It helps in protecting the knitting machine from the odd power source. Whenever such type of condition occurs, then the switch automatically switches off the knitting machine.
  14. Main motor – It helps in controlling the carriage.
  15. Side tension – It is used to absorbing the slack of the yarn when the carriage reverses.
  16. Side tension dial – The primary function of this is to regulate the side tension.
  17. Carrier Control Equipment: It includes:
  18. Carrier – It is used to carry the yarns.
  19. Carrier stopper – It stops the carriers present at both the ends of the carrier rails.
  20. Carrier rail – Rails for the carriers.
  21. Yarn feeder – It is used to feeds the yarn between the needle gaps.
  22. Knot catchers: There are two types of knot catchers in the flat knitting machine:-
  23. Type (a) – It senses the presence of any knot between the yarns and if any knot persists it then it will stop the carriage.
  24. Type (b) – It also detects the knots. Whenever it identifies even a small knot, then it slows down the carriage speed.
  25. Knot catcher-adjust dials: Two types of dials are present in the flat knitting machines:
  26. Knot catcher adjust dial (1) –It regulates the knot catcher for detecting the larger knots.
  27. Knot catcher adjust dial (2) – It regulates the knot catcher for detecting the smaller knots.
  28. Fabrics swell direction – It recognizes the existence of any bump at the needle gap.
  29. Brush – It opens up the needle latch and helps in preventing the latch from closing.
  30. Stitch presser – It helps in pressing the fabrics within the gaps of needles.
  31. Cone Stand Plate: It is a kind of desk on which the cone is present.
  32. Cone Stand: It holds the cone at one place.
  33. Stop Switch: This stop switch can only be used in an emergency.
  34. Operation Bar: The purpose of the operation bar is to halt the carriage. It is also used for clearing the operation errors.
  35. Side Tension Equipment: It offers the tension force which is required by the yarn to feed it into the yarn feeder. The working of the side tension equipment is similar to the tension equipment.
  36. Dust cleaner – It helps to clean the dust from the gaps by sucking it like vacuum cleaner. Throughout the process of knitting, we have to adjust the interval of the suction and can be repeated the sequence of exhaust, pause and suction by pausing it in the controller screen.
  37. Needle selection gauge and sensor –These gauge and sensor installed on the carriage. It helps to detect the advancing direction of the carriage and in counting the needles.
  38. Fabrics Take Down Roller: It consists of two types of rollers:

a) Main roller – It helps in taking the fabric down.

b) Sub roller –The working of this roller is to presses the fabric between the main rollers and then takes it down.

  1. Yarn guide pin – It helps in preventing the yarn from twining around the main roller.
  2. Lock Lever: It pressed the sub roller when it directly comes in the contact with the main roller. By pulling the lever towards outside, then it releases the sub roller from the main roller.
  3. Ball screw unit – It helps in converting the revolution of the racking motor towards the lateral motion of the needle.
  4. Controller: By using controller, the knitting data can be loaded to the floppy disk. It also sends commands to the knitting machine for executing the data. It is easy to input as well as modify the data with the help of controller.
